Cave Exploring

Explore where and how our earliest ancestors lived. De Kelders offers a variety of caves to be explored, the most famous of these is Klipgat Cave (stone hole), named after a remarkable window-like opening that yields spectacular views over the bay. Remains found in this seaside cave date back between 65 000 and 85 000 years, making it one of the oldest sites of modern Homo sapiens in the world, and one of only three places in South Africa where such early remains have been excavated - only discovered in the late 1960’s. Marvel at spectacular limestone rock formations, artfully sculptured by nature. Take the wooden staircase down towards the shore, head over rocky terrain and into the magnificent caves. It’s best to go at low-tide. Bring good hiking shoes, as the cave can be slippery, and a warm jacket as it can get windy. Cost R60 (adults), R40 (children) Times Daily, 7am – 7pm R60 entrance pp, contact Cape Nature offices.

Visit the Plaatjieskraal Ghost Town next to the sea. Buried between the dunes, repossessed by nature. Outside of Buffeljagsbaai, here you'll find an abandoned holiday resort built in the 80's. The resort was built by the district municipality for locals living in Elim & Bredasdorp area. 23 little houses, equipped with braai facilities, a reception building and 2 workers houses, all just a stone's throw away from the sea. Over time the moving sand dunes came to take back what used to be theirs. The fight against these powerful natural forces were lost as the buildings were slowly buried by the sand. Visit Gansbaai Harbour

While it may not be glamorous, it’s authentic, active, and packed with character. Here's what makes it worth the stop: Gansbaai is a historic fishing town, and the harbour is still very much a working port. You’ll see local fishermen launching boats, returning with fresh catches of snoek or yellowtail. It's a rare opportunity to witness South Africa's traditional fishing lifestyle up close. It’s a working harbour, not a polished tourist attraction—so expect a rustic, authentic vibe. There are small spots around the harbour where you can get locally caught fish—some sold directly from boats or informal markets. It's not a touristy fish market, but that’s part of the charm. Sometimes you’ll find pop-up seafood vendors selling snoek biltong or fresh calamari rolls. It's a great place to take photos, watch the ocean, or simply enjoy the salty sea air.
